Adieu is more like Aloha when it comes to French tennis and Gael Monfils.
Monfils, who bid farewell to French fans in a touching tribute at the Rolex Paris Masters last week, has been named new French Davis Cup captain, the French Tennis Federation announced today.
The 40-year-old Monfils, who succeeds Paul-Henri Mathieu as captain, will be in the captain’s chair when France faces an opponent to be determined in the Davis Cup Qualifier set for February 5-7th, 2027.
“The French Tennis Federation (FFT) is pleased to announce the appointment of Gaël Monfils as captain of the French Davis Cup team,” the Federation said in a statement today. “Gaël Monfils succeeds Paul-Henri Mathieu, whom the FFT would like to warmly thank for his investment at the head of the French team over the past three years.
“With his twenty-two years on the professional circuit, Gaël Monfils will bring to the French team all his experience at the highest level. In his new role, he will benefit from the support of all the FFT teams, in particular Gilles Simon and Richard Gasquet, to support him in his mission and to create the best conditions for performance.”
The acrobatic Monfils posted a 12-3 record playing 14 Davis Cup ties for France. The former world No. 6 said he assumes the post with great pride in French tennis.
“I am immensely proud to become captain of the French team,” Monfils said. “This blue jersey means so much to me.”
The charismatic Monfils officially retired from tennis on October 5th. Monfils concludes his career with a 588-360 record, 13 career championships, more than $25 million in prize money and a lifetime of exhilarating moments for tennis fans all over the world.
