Marc Lopez partnered Rafael Nadal to win the Olympic doubles gold medal for Spain.

Lopez is now a central figure in Spanish tennis.

The 44-year-old Lopez has been hired as new Spanish Davis Cup captain. The Barcelona native’s official tenure starts on January 1st, 2027 in a contract that runs through 2029, the Spanish Tennis Federation announced today.

Former doubles world No. 3 Lopez will succeed David Ferrer, who is stepping down to return the pro circuit as a coach, and will be beside Ferrer as Davis Cup coach when Spain plays the Davis Cup Final 8, November 24-29th in Bologna, Italy.

An accomplished doubles player, Marc Lopez partnered Feliciano Lopez to the 2016 Roland Garros doubles championship. Months later, Marc Lopez and Nadal joined forces to capture the 2016 Olympic doubles gold medal in Rio.

Marc Lopez and Marcel Granollers also won the 2012 ATP Doubles Masters Cup becoming just the second Spanish team to win it after Manuel Orantes and Juan Gisbert in 1975.

Marc Lopez, who went on to join Nadal’s coaching team, retired from the pro tour in May, 2022.
