Daniil Medvedev reached his 96th career quarterfinal on Saturday in Hangzhou. Coleman Wong reached his fourth.
There’s a disparity in experience between the two. Medvedev, the former World No. 1, has been there and done that, but never in Hangzhou, where he is making his second appearance.
Wong, meanwhile, is just touching the cusp of his potential as he enters the live rankings at No. 98 after reaching his fourth quarterfinal of 2026.
Wong took out Adolfo Daniel Vallejo, 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-3, and will face Medvedev in the quarterfinals on Sunday in Hangzhou, a city of over 11 million residents and the capital of Zhejiang province.
The 22-year-old Hong Kong native improved to 10-9 on the season, reaching the 10-win plateau for the first time in his career.
Wong also reached quarterfinals in Hong Kong, Delray Beach and Los Cabos this year.
He had to battle back to win in two hours and 32 minutes after dropping the second set in the final match of the day Saturday in Hangzhou.
“It was a really tough match,” Wong said. “Dani is a really good player. We practiced a lot together when we were juniors in Rafa’s Academy in Spain. It will never be an easy match.”
“I’m really excited. I will give everything I have,” he said.
Medvedev got past France’s Valentin Royer, 7-6(6), 6-3, to reach his seventh quarterfinal of 2026.
“Valentin is a very tough player, he played finals here last year, so I knew it would not be an easy first round,” Medvedev said. “I managed to serve very well in the important moments – I’m really happy with it. I think my level was pretty good – I can play much better – but it was good and I’m happy to have the win.”
Medvedev saved all five break points he faced and hit seven backhand winners as he edged out the No. 104-ranked Frenchman. The 30-year-old now has 245 hard-court wins since the start of 2020 – more than any player on the ATP Tour.
The quarterfinals are set for Sunday, and they include three Russians and five unseeded players.
