Iga Swiatek is celebrating North American summer hard court season as a moveable feast.
Today, a hungry Swiatek launched her Cincinnati title defense dishing a bagel dismissing qualifier Emiliana Arango 6-3, 6-0 in her Cincinnati Open opener.
It is Swiatek’s seventh straight win following her 6-2, 6-3 thumping of world No. 2 Elena Rybakina in the Toronto final for her 12th WTA 1000 championship.
Empowered by her 27th tournament title, Swiatek converted five of six break points raising her 2026 record to 30-12.
The second-seeded Rybakina defeated American Taylor Townsend 6-3, 6-4 in her opener earlier today. Australian Open champion Rybakina will face Magdalena Frech next. The 41st-ranked Frech surprised 26th-seeded Jelena Ostapenko 6-1, 6-3.
The seventh-seeded Swiatek surged through seven games in a row sealing her sixth straight win in Cincinnati. Swiatek has won nine of her last 10 matches in the Queen City setting up a third-round clash vs. Maria Sakkari.
Sakkari outlasted Kamilla Rakhimova 6-2, 5-7, 76-1 yesterday. Swiatek has won five of nine meetings vs. the 29th-seeded Sakkari.
In her Toronto title run, Swiatek showed her consistency, poise under pressure and willingness to play extended rallies.
Today, Swiatek stormed net a couple of times in the sixth game showing sharp all-court skills. A Swiatek smash helped her carve out another break and a 4-2 lead.
Hugging the baseline, Arango was taking her topspin forehand on the rise engaging in a crackling rally with the Pole. Then Swiatek stepped in and clubbed her two-hander down the line holding for 5-2.
Swiatek slid a serve into the body sealing the 44-minute opening set she bookended with love holds.
Swinging more freely, Swiatek was moving with a purpose and striking with punishing intent breaking at love to start the second set.
While Arango was doing a good job extending points, Swiatek was better and ending them. When a disconsolate Arango double faulted away the break and a 3-0 second-set lead and energized Swiatk trotted to her seat.
Displacing Arango with the down the line return, Swiatek swatted a diagonal forehand winner breaking for 5-0.
The seventh seed served it out at 15 winning 12 of the final 14 points.
