Two years removed from her shining Wimbledon run, Lulu Sun is stepping away from tennis.

The 2024 Wimbledon quarterfinalist Sun announced she’s taking a well-being break from the sport in an Instagram post.

The physical and mental demands of a competition schedule are relentless and can impact your life in more ways than one,” Sun posted on Instagram. “With that in mind, I have decided to take some time away from competition to give myself a little space for my wellbeing and to enjoy life beyond the tennis court.

“It will give me the opportunity to step away from the demands of competition, reset and prepare for what’s ahead.”

The 25-year-old New Zealander earned her first WTA ranking at the age of 14.

Sun stunned the tennis world playing through qualifying at the 2024 Wimbledon where she scored wins over Alexandra Eala, Zheng Qinwen and Emma Raducanu in an inspired run to the quarterfinals. Sun pushed Donna Vekic to three sets before bowing in a run that helped spike her ranking to a career-high of No. 39.

Last fall, Sun reached the Guangzhou final, falling to American Ann Li 7-6(6), 6-2.

It’s been a tough road in 2026 as Sun fell in the Australian Open first round and failed to qualify for both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
