Alexandra Eala Is Bringing an Entire Nation to Tennis—and Even Boosting Jessica Pegula’s Podcast

Alexandra Eala has single-handedly transformed the demographics of tennis. Through a series of historic milestones, she has introduced a nation of 117.8 million people to the sport, creating a rapidly growing fan base with her every achievement.

Eala’s popularity has become so significant that it’s even benefiting Jessica Pegula’s podcast, The Players Box.

After her second-round victory in Toronto, the Buffalo native spoke about what has become known as the “Eala effect.”

“Filipino fans are insane,” Pegula said, referring to the surge in listeners after she faced Eala in the DC Open final on Monday. “We’re getting—I don’t know how many we ended up with—but we definitely got like 4,000 or 5,000 more subscribers after that match.

“Even when I was leaving the stadium, they were cheering for me. They’re just excited to be there. There’s just so much excitement.”

Pegula believes Eala’s growing influence is helping expand tennis to a whole new audience.

“It’s crazy, their presence,” she said. “I hadn’t really looked online much yet, but someone from our team texted us to say there were so many Filipino comments and so much interaction with their fan base, especially through our podcast. It’s pretty cool.

“I’m glad they like to listen and follow us. I think it’s really neat that it’s crossed over.”

Coco Gauff also acknowledged the “Eala effect” after her second-round win over fellow American Kayla Day in Toronto.

“I think I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: the demographic that Alex is bringing to the sport of tennis is so important,” Gauff said. “I think all of us should really embrace that because we’re all benefiting from it.”

Gauff and Eala have faced each other twice—first in Dubai in February and then at Indian Wells in March—with each player winning one match.

“Just to see a nation of people who maybe don’t always feel represented in this sport finally see themselves out there, I think it’s incredibly inspiring. It also makes it fun for me to go out there and compete.

“I honestly gained some fans from her community after that match, which I thought was really cool.”

Gauff also praised Eala beyond her on-court success.

“I know Alex personally, and what you guys see on the court is exactly what we see off the court. I’m always going to support her, and it was great to see her win in DC.”

Eala’s impact is extending far beyond wins and rankings. As the most successful player in the history of Filipino tennis, she is introducing millions of new fans to the sport—and her outsized influence is in its early stages.
