Victoria Mboko Will Not Defend Canadian Title Due to Knee Injury
Victoria Mboko injured her left knee after slipping on the grass during her first match of the grass court season at Queen’s Club. The 19-year-old had to pull out of doubles with Serena Williams, and now she’s going to miss her title defense in Canada.
World No. 10 Mboko, who injured the MCL in her knee,
“Some tournaments mean a little more than others. But the @nbotoronto means everything to me,” Mboko wrote on Instagram. “Not being able to play at home this summer in front of the people I love and with the support of the Toronto crowd is deeply disappointing as it has been something I’ve been looking so much forward to.
“I am sharing this message with you as this is a part of my journey, one that has just started. I will be back.”
Mboko, one of two teenagers in the WTA’s Top 10, is 24-10 on the season. She reached the final in Dubai, then back-to-back quarterfinals at Indian Wells and Miami. The Canadian also reached the round of 16 at the Australian Open and the third round at Roland-Garros.
