Fan Steals Tiafoe’s Winning Racquet, Returns It After Social Media Post

A fired-up Frances Tiafoe delivered the most grueling major victory of his career today.
Then a fan pulled off major larceny stealing his Yonex racquet right out of his hand.
Watch a joyous Tiafoe engaged in a massive group hug with fans in celebration of his thrilling 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 6-4, 6-7(1), 6-4 Roland Garros second-round win over Hubert Hurkacz.

The pulsating four hour, 43-minute triumph in blistering heat was the longest match win of Tiafoe’s career.
In addition, Tiafoe resides in the top quarter of the draw blown wide open by world No. 1 Jannik Sinner’s collapse and five-set loss to Juan Manuel Cerundolo and fifth-seeded compatriot Ben Shelton bowing to Belgian Raphael Collignon.
As an elated Tiafoe embraces the group, watch the upper left corner of the screen as a female fan crashes the celebration, audaciously swipes the racquet right out of Tiafoe’s hand and slips into the crowd.
When Tiafoe walks back out on court notice he’s not holding the racquet anymore.
Tiafoe realized the theft as he was packing up his Yonex bag and saw he had seven sticks instead of the eight racquets he carried out on court.
On the advice of his agent, Tiafoe made this social media post offering two tickets to a future match in exchange for the racquet.
Talking to the TNT commentary team after the incident, Tiafoe noted he feels he’d have “no chance” of getting the racquet back if the major theft had occurred in the United States. However, since it happened in Paris, he was confident the fan would respond.
Tiafoe proved prescient, reporting he did exchange some autographed gear in exchange for his winning racquet.
All’s well that ends well.
Tiafoe not only got his winning racquet back, he’ll face qualifier Jaime Faria for a fourth-round spot in the top quarter of opportunity.
Still, it makes you wonder how “fans” of a sport that is based on mutual respect, integrity and sportsmanship can be such brazen thieves, particularly after Tiafoe and Hurkacz combined to deliver nearly five hours of exhilarating tennis.
It’s not the first time a spectator has played thief in a Grand Slam.
After Jannik Sinner wrapped up a 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 annihilation of Alexander Bublik on Arthur Ashe Stadium Court at the 2025 US Open last September, he was walking toward a few young fans to accommodate their autograph requests.
Then, the knucklehead in the photo below unzipped Sinner’s racquet bag as if trying to swipe some of the contents inside.
Full credit to the security guard trailing Sinner who saw the fan’s attempted thievery and immediately knocked his hand away. Watch Sinner spin away and reverse course.

We can all get excited watching dramatic Grand Slam drama and many major matches end with a feeding frenzy of fans requesting selfies, tournament towels or sweatbands from players (remember Federer and Nadal would both often toss their sweatbands into the stands?).
Still, it’s shameful to see a few trying to steal from the stars.
