Alexandra Eala kicked off her 2026 clay season with a hard-fought victory over local favorite Julia Grabher, putting on a break-point-saving clinic as she edged the Austrian 6-4, 6-3 to snap a three-match clay-court losing streak in her Linz debut.

The victory was Eala’s first win on clay since Madrid last year, and just the fourth of her career in ten previous main draw matches on the surface.

The clay season represents a great chance for Eala, currently ranked No. 46, to make a move back up the rankings, as she is defending just 70 points between now and the end of Roland-Garros. By winning today, she has already earned 60.

Eala saved all break points in a tense opening set and finally broke to claim the arduous set in the final game. The 20-year-old came through a seven-deuce game at 3-3, which proved critical in the opener.

“I think I kept the intensity well throughout the match. She’s a very intense player and has really good shots, so I’m really happy with the win.”

Not surprisingly, the rising pioneer from Quezon City, got plenty of support from her Filipino fan base.

“It means so much,” she said, before addressing her fans in her native language.

In the second set, Eala broke for 3-1 and saved two more break points to extend the lead to 4-1. She was reeled back in a few games later as Grabher converted her first break on her 10th opportunity of the match, but the Filipina sensation broke back in the next game and held to 15 to serve out the win.

Eala hit 18 winners against 20 unforced errors and saved nine of 10 break points to secure the victory in one hour and 42 minutes.

She will face No. 4 seed Jelena Ostapenko in the second round.

Tagger Has Electrifying Debut

The news wasn’t all bad for Austrian players, as 18-year-old Lilli Tagger scored a 6-4, 7-6(5) win over Paula Badosa on her tournament debut. The teenager, coached by Francesca Schiavone, nearly squandered a 4-0 lead in the second set but delivered a pitch-perfect tiebreak to close out the Spaniard.

“I honestly was a bit tight at the end,” Tagger said in her on-court interview. “It’s never easy but when there are close points, important points, I try to keep going with the process, play my game. It’s not all the time very easy, but it works so I try to do it.”

Tagger will face No. 3 seed Liudmila Samsonova in the second round.

Linz has been elevated to a 500-level event this year and is being played on indoor clay.
