Shevchenko Stuns Shelton in Miami; ATP Results from Saturday

Ben Shelton had been making a name for himself on North American soil of late.

Entering Saturday’s second-round match with Alexander Shevchenko, the World No. 9 had won 20 of his last 24 matches on home soil, highlighted by titles at the Toronto Masters and, earlier this month, in Dallas.

Miami, for whatever reason, has not been his jam.

Shelton fell to 84th-ranked Shevchenko, 6-7(3), 7-6(3), 6-3, in a hard-fought battle that marked the Kazakhstani’s first Top 10 win since 2024.

Shelton drops to 1-4 lifetime in Miami—a surprising stat, given that he played his college tennis in Florida. Speaking of strange numbers, Shelton hadn’t lost to a player ranked as low as Shevchenko since falling to then-No. 192 Coleman Wong last year—in, you guessed it, Miami.

Shevchenko was on the brink in the second set, serving at 4-5, 15-30, but raised his level from there. The Kazakhstani, who battled injuries last season, is once again looking like a Top 50 talent.

“It takes 100 percent to stay in the match all the time against these kinds of players,” Shevchenko said on court. “There was a moment when I was feeling a little bit tired, but as soon as I got the momentum back, I brought the energy back.”

He will face Ugo Humbert in the third round.
