Fallout From War: Security Incident Halts Fujairah Challenger
A scary incident put a halt to play at the ATP Challenger event in Fujairah, UAE, as play abruptly suspended on Tuesday, following a serious security incident linked to escalating regional conflict. During a second-round match between top seed Hayato Matsuoka and Daniil Ostapenkov, livestream cameras caught play as it was interrupted by the sound of air-raid sirens and nearby explosions.
According to reports, the panic occurred after air defense systems successfully intercepted a drone over the region. Falling debris from the interception ignited a significant fire in the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone, located approximately 10 kilometers from the Fujairah Tennis and Country Club. Dramatic footage from the court showed players and officials hastily abandoning the match to seek shelter in designated safe areas as sirens wailed in the distance.
Iranian drone and missile attacks have been fired towards the UAE over the past three days, since the outbreak of the US and Israeli attacks on Iran.
“Relevant authorities responded to a fire that broke out in the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone, resulting from falling debris following the successful interception of a drone by air defence systems,” the Government of Fujairah media office said in a statement, per the BBC
