Upset Specials: Kypson Stuns De Minaur in Acapulco, Jodar Topples Norrie
Upsets were in the air on Monday in Acapulco as the 2026 Abierto Mexicano Telcel kicked off.
World No.103 Patrick Kypson took out two-time champion Alex de Minaur, the World No.6, while World No.114 Rafael Jodar blitzed Cameron Norrie in 55 minutes for his first ATP 500 win.

Kypson got the party started with a 6-1 6-7(4) 7-6(4) victory over De Minaur that snapped the Aussie’s 10-match winning streak in Acapulco. De Minaur, the 2023 and 2024 champion, did not play the event last year. After being hit off the court in the opening set, he did everything in his power to get back into the match, taking a second-set tiebreak, then moving ahead by a break in the third.
But Kypson would not relent. He broke back for 5-all in the decider then rallied from 2-0 down in the tiebreak to earn his first ATP win since 2024 Indian Wells. Kypson’s biggest career win by ranking sets a second-round clash with Brandon Nakashima.
In the nightcap in Acapulco, Rafael Jodar ran roughshod over Cameron Norrie, breaking open a match that was on serve through seven games as he earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory over the World No.26 for his biggest career win.
The former US Open junior champion, ranked No.114, will face either Grigor Dimitrov or Terence Atmane in the second round. He played some jaw-dropping tennis against the former Acapulco finalist, routinely smacking winners and hardly reacting.
In other action, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, 2025 runner-up, defeated Daniel Altmaier, 7-5 6-3, while Valentin Vacherot took out Coleman Wong, 4-6 6-3 6-2.
Aleksandar Kovacevic was also a winner, 7-6(1) 7-6(3) over Adam Walton
