Monfils Gets Sent Off in Style After Roland-Garros Career Ends
The illustrious Roland-Garros career of Gael Monfils came to a close on Monday night in Court Philippe-Chatrier, but not without plenty of drama, and an emotional sendoff.
The Frenchman fell to compatriot Hugo Gaston, 6-2, 6-3, 2-6, 3-6, 6-0, completing his Roland-Garros career in a tie with Yannik Noah for most career wins at the event by a Frenchman (40) in the Open Era.
The former world No.6 will play the rest of season and finish his career in Bercy at the Paris Masters.
After the loss the 39-year-old was feted by the fans. He made an emotional speech to his wife and mother of the couple’s daughter, Skai, that was an absolute tearjerker.
There were video messages from Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka, Carlos Alcaraz, Arthur Fils, Jannik Sinner, Gilles Simon, Richard Gasquet, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Yannick Noah.
Monfils was joined on court by his peers Tsonga, Simon and Gasquet as well.
It was a particularly emotional Day 2 at Roland-Garros, with three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka, Monfils and Roberto Bautista Agut all playing their last ever match on the Parisian clay.
