Tomic Continues Winning Ways In Australia Moving Past Verdasco

(January 16, 2011) One of the most anticipated opening day matches made sure that it did not disappoint. Seemingly ready to make an exit after dropping the first two sets,
Bernard Tomic
fought back to upset the 22nd seed,
Fernando Verdasco
, by a score of 4-6. 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 in 4 hours 11 minutes.
Australian transplant Tomic had only played Verdasco once before, three years ago in Brisbane when he was cast aside easily by the Spaniard. The final result appeared as if it would be the same after Verdasco took the first two sets and Tomic was deflated after giving up the tiebreak.
It simply would not be Grand Slam tennis without a few surprises, and the Australian was elated to deliver at his home major. As their varying styles showed, Verdasco was the aggressor, but Tomic hung tough and eventually picked apart the movement of the Spaniard, frequently hitting behind him.
Verdasco managed to hit 13 more winners than the teenager, but also committed 23 more errors leading to his eventual downfall. The Spaniard appeared especially troubled on his serve, facing 21 break chances and saving only 14.
With the win, Tomic advances to face
Sam Querrey
in the next round, an easy 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 winner over Kenny De Schepper. Querrey has not played in a Grand Slam since Roland Garros last year due to a wrist injury that required surgery.
In other tough first round wins, 13th-seeded
Alexandr Dolgopolov
dropped the first two sets before storming back with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 win over Australia’s Greg Jones. American
Donald Young
nearly found a way to lose to Peter Gojowczyk after starting strong in a 6-1, 6-2, 4-6, 1-6, 6-2 victory.
Flavia Cipolla of Italy came back from a two-sets-to-one deficit to win over
Nikolay Davydenko
6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
