(July 13, 2010) Serena Williams has stepped out of the World TeamTennis season after sustaining a cut on her foot.
Williams was scheduled to team with older sister Venus for the defending WTT champion Washington Kastles, but her WTT season has been reduced to an autograph-signing session.
The World No. 1 played Kim Clijsters in last week's Best of Belgium exhibition before a world-record crowd of 35,681 at King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels, Belgium. She returned to the States with a foot injury and withdrew from her scheduled first WTT match against the New York Buzz in Glens Falls, N.Y. on Friday.
Williams was also scheduled to play WTT matches for the Kastles in Philadelphia (July 13), Washington, D.C. (July 14) and New York (July 15).
Although unable to play, Williams flew from Belgium on Friday to join her teammates in Glens Falls, where she also signed autographs for young fans and addressed the crowd at the match.
"I'm very disappointed that I won't be able to play in the WTT matches this season," said Williams. "It is always such a fun experience and I love interacting with the fans in the cities that I don't often have the opportunity to play in during the rest of the year."
