Serena Aiming to Take Sixth Title in Miami from Radwanska
By Chris Oddo
(March 18, 2013) --
Current World No. 1 and five-time Sony Open champion
Serena Williams
will return to action this week in Miami. Here's a breakdown of a star-studded draw that features all but one top 20 player (Sam Stosur withdrew due to injury).
Read: Miami Men's Draw Preview, Will Murray Bring the Heat in Miami?
Serena Williams' Quarter:
Serena has had ample to time to rest after a tumultuous start to the season that saw her injuries sabotage her quest for a 16th career Grand Slam at the Australian Open. Miami has always been one of her favorite places to play, as her five titles attests, but she has only played once since 2009, losing in the quarterfinals last year to
Caroline Wozniacki
.
Serena has a tricky draw that could see her face
Yanina Wickmayer
in the third round, Dominika Cibulkova or Lucie Safarova in the round of 16, and
Li Na
or
Caroline Wozniacki
in the quarterfinals. After a bye in the first round, Williams may get former top tenner
Flavia Pennetta
in her first match.
But if her fitness is good, she's obviously the favorite to make it through.
Pick: Serena
Early Match to Watch:
Li Na and Kiki Bertens, Possible second-rounder. It will be interesting to see what type of form the World No. 5 is in after being out of action since the Australian Open due to an ankle injury.
Agnieszka Radwanska's Quarter:
Radwanska, the current World No. 4, will start her title defense in so-so form. She hasn't had a bad year, but it hasn't been great either, and she'll no doubt feel some pressure as the defending champion in Miami.
Radwanska could face a very challenging third-round matchup with
Mona Barthel
, and if she navigates her way into the round of 16, she could face the winner of what will be a highly anticipated third-round match between
Venus Williams
and
Sloane Stephens
if the seeds hold.
In the lower half of this quarter,
Marion Bartoli
could face a wildcard
Andrea Petkovic
if the German can get by
Bojana Jovanovski
of Serbia in the first round, and
Petra Kvitova
could face the tricky
Peng Shuai
in the second round.
With Bartoli and Kvitova battling for a round of 16 spot, and Radwanska facing multiple challenges in her section, this quarter could be the most difficult to pick.
Pick: Bartoli
Early Match to Watch:
Petkovic-Bartoli, possibly in round two; Venus Williams and Kimiko Date-Krumm in a possible round two veteran matchup.
Sharapova's Quarter
The World No. 2 has reached the finals in Miami in back-to-back years, and from the looks of her draw, she's got a very good chance to do it again this year. The next two highest-seeded player in her quarter, 14th-seeded
Maria Kirilenko
or 8th-seeded
Sara Errani
could be Sharapova's toughest competition in her quarter, and she crushed each player in her run to the Indian Wells title last week.
Ana Ivanovic
and
Ekaterina Makarova
could also make some noise in this section, as well as unseeded
Svetlana Kuznetsova
,
Sabine Lisicki
, or maybe even
Urszula Radwanska
.
Pick: Sharapova
Early Match to Watch:
Kuznetsova-Makarova, possible 2nd-rounder.
Azarenka's Quarter:
Azarenka is the figurative wildcard in this draw, because it's not really clear if the foot problems that forced her out of the Indian Wells draw are going to either hamper her performance or force her to withdraw from Miami.
Normally the undefeated and a two-time Miami champion would be our pick to make it out of this quarter, but with she's got a tricky draw from the get-go, and we're not so sure that she's even going to play, let alone compete for a title.
If she does go she could face 17-year-old American wildcard
Madison Keys
in the second round in a match that American enthusiasts will be drooling over. Can Keys do to Azarenka what Sloane Stephens almost did in Australia? Likely not, but that match will likely tell us what we can expect from the Belarusian for the remainder of the draw.
If she looks fit, she's the odds-on favorite to pass through a quarter that features 6th-seeded
Angelique Kerber
(possible QF opponent), 15th-seeded
Roberta Vinci
(possible R16 opponent) and
Nadia Petrova
(possible QF opponent).
When it's all said and done, Azarenka's biggest challenge, prior to a possible quarterfinal with Kerber, will be to get off the court quickly so that her foot's healing process continues to progress.
Pick: Kerber
Early Match to Watch:
Laura Robson vs. Camila Giorgi, first round, Madison Keys vs. Azarenka, possible second-rounder
Semifinals:
Williams d. Bartoli, Sharapova d. Kerber
Finals:
