(January 22,2011) Samantha Stosur's trip to the Australian Open second week ran into a road block today. Wimbledon semifinalist Petra Kvitova crushed 35 winners in slamming Stosur, 7-6(5), 6-3 to knock the final Aussie in field out in the third round.
Bidding to reach the round of 16 for the second straight time, the fifth-seeded Stosur could not solve Kvitova's power off both wings.
The 25th-seeded Czech reached the fourth round for the first time in three appearances Down Under. Kvitova joins compatriot Iveta Benesova as one of two Czech women in the final 16. The left-hander will face 22nd-seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta for a place in the quarterfinals. Benesova takes on second-seeded Vera Zvonareva.
French Open finalist Stosur opened a 3-0 lead in the tie breaker, but could not seal the deal and Kvitova roared back to seize the tie breaker and take a lead in the second set.
Crushing winners with equal authority off both backhand and forehand, the 20-year-old exploited Stosur's habit of running around her backhand to hit her forehand by repeatedly ripping her forehand down the line into the open court.
