Nadal French Open (August 9, 2012) -- Rafael Nadal will not play next week's Cincinnati Masters event, the 11-time Grand Slam champion announced today.

Cincinnati is the only Masters event that Nadal has not been to the final of.

Nadal, who hasn't played since losing to Lukas Rosol in the second round at Wimbledon in what is considered by many to be one of the biggest upsets in Grand Slam history, now faces the prospects of missing the US Open because of his knee problems.

It's not the first time the 26-year-old has missed time due to a series of problematic and ongoing knee issues. In 2009, the Spaniard famously missed the chance to defend his Wimbledon title, but he returned with a vengeance in 2010, winning three Grand Slams, including the US Open for the first time.

UPDATE: At this week's Rogers Cup Toronto Masters Series event, Andy Murray, after winning his opening round match, has withdrawn from the event as a precaution before competing in next week's Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. Murray received a medical timeout on his sore left knee during yesterday's match.
