Irish golf star Rory McIlroy shocked the sports world by abruptly ending his engagement to former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki on Wednesday.

In a statement released through his management company, McIlroy said he was not ready for marriage.

"The problem is mine," McIlroy said. "The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails."

"There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people. I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we have had."

According to the BBC, McIlroy confirmed the decision to end the engagement was mutual and amicable during a press conference at a PGA event in Wentworth.

Both spent time with each other in London recently along with McIlroy posting a photo on Twitter of them dining together in Monte Carlo on Sunday evening.

McIlroy and Wozniacki announced their engagement on New Year's Eve in Sydney. The couple had been together for over two years.

Wozniacki, who is set to compete at next week's French Open, has not yet made a statement about the news.
