(December 13, 2010) Retired Swiss tennis player Martina Hingis got married on Friday, Dec. 10 to French show jumper Thibault Hutin.
According to Swiss newspaper Schweizer-Illustrierte, which posted wedding photos on their website, the two wed in a private civil ceremony in the Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine.
"Our wedding came as a surprise for many,” Hingis told the Swiss magazine, “but it has been in planning long in advance." The two are said to be planning a more "romantic" wedding for the summer of 2011.
The 30-year-old Hingis met, 24-year-old, Hutin at a show-jumping competition in St. Tropez in April. Their meeting came shortly after the former no.1 player broke off a long-term engagement to Swiss attorney Andreas Bieri.
Hingis held the top women's ranking for over 200 weeks, dominating women's tennis while still in her teens. Due to injury, however, she forced to end her professional career in 2002 at the age of 22. Though she attempted a comeback in 2005, Hingis chose to retire officially in 2007 after testing positive for cocaine during Wimbledon of that year. A charge she denied but never sought out a repel.
Following the nuptials, the newlyweds joined family and friends for post-wedding festivities in the Presidential Suite of the Hotel George V in Paris.
The newlyweds are rumored to be planning a honeymoon in the Maldives.
