Marray and Nielsen Wimbledon 2012
(July 8th, 2012) Wimbledon history was made yesterday in the Gentlemen's Doubles Final as the unseeded team of Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen defeated the No. 5 seeds Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 6-3. Marray, a native of Great Britain, became the first Englishman to win a Men's doubles title at Wimbledon in 76 years. Nielsen became the first man from Denmark to ever win a Major title in singles or doubles.

What made the pair's victory all the more special and improbable was that it was their first ever main Tour event together and they needed a wildcard to get into the tournament because their doubles rankings were so low. Marray and Nielsen defeated the defending champions Bob and Mike Bryan in five sets in the semifinals. Lindstedt and Tecau were aiming to win their first ever Wimbledon title in their third consecutive trip to the finals.

"I thought we could do well because, like I said, I just missed out on entry with someone else to the tournament. I played with Freddy the week before. I know Freddy well, know his game, and thought we could play well together," said Marray. "After having a good week in Nottingham a couple weeks ago, I really thought we could do well here.  Obviously I didn’t think we could ever win it, but as the week went on we kept gaining confidence and coming through some tight matches."

Aside from the prize money, both men are well on their way to being qualified to compete in the year-end championships in London and they also earned a new sponsorship deal with Fred Perry.
