Yanina Wickmayer and Marion Bartoli each scored her biggest win of the year Thursday as both players advanced to the BNP Paribas Open semifinals.
Bartoli defeated Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 7-6(4) while Wickmayer pounded Shahar Peer 6-3, 6-2. The pair will square off Friday in the semifinals.
Bartoli didn't feel well heading into the match, but made up for it with a gutsy tie-break win in the second set.
“Since this morning I noticed I felt quite bad,” she said. “I was not able to eat any breakfast. I slept before my match, because I was really feeling sick. I went on court, and at the beginning, the weather was that hot, so it kind of helped me. But then it started to feel really hot, and then in the end of the first set I was definitely not feeling very good."
It was a breakthrough for Bartoli at Indian Wells, her first time past the fourth round in nine appearances.
Wickmayer avenged a loss to Peer at Dubai last month with the victory that took just 62 minutes.
