Marcos Baghdatis Weight Loss & Andy Roddick Fitness Plan For 2011
By Lauren Lynch
(December 27,2010) As a very common way to start off the New Year, many people take it upon themselves to make a resolution to get fit.
Mardy Fish transformed his body
and game last year for a successful season. It seems that
Marcos Baghdatis
and
Andy Roddick
in a similar fashion and are resolved to start off 2011 right.
Marcos Baghdatis has reportedly lost approximately 10 pounds since he started rigorous training on November 14 which is about two weeks away from when he suffered a shoulder injury that made him pull out of the Paris Masters.
Baghdatis' trainer, Andreas Nicolaou, told the ATP that, "He was 86 kg, 14.8 per cent body fat. Now he’s 82.3 kg and 10 per cent body fat, which is a really good number. The main thing is to be stable and stay on that number of 10 per cent body fat. The development plan is to decrease the fat and increase the muscle mass, so Marcos will be more powerful and more agile and quicker.”
Converting those kilograms over to pounds, Baghdatis was about 189.6 lbs. and is now 181.4 lbs. He did more than play tennis to get in shape aerobically that includes playing soccer, swimming, mountain biking, weight training, jogging, and high altitude training in the Troodos mountains of Cyprus. Diet-wise, he traded fatty and fried foods for steamed or grilled options in healthy portions and began drinking more water.
In 2010, the 25-year-old Cyprus native began the season successfully beating
Viktor Troicki
,
Lleyton Hewitt
,
Mardy Fish
and
Richard Gasquet
to win his fourth career title in Sydney. Baghdatis beat
Roger Federer
for the first time at
Indian Wells
, reached semifinals in Munich and Cincinnati, and was runner-up to
David Nalbandian
in Washington, DC and to Troicki in Moscow.
Now that he is lighter and faster, he should play well for his first 2011 tournament in Mubadala World Tennis Championship exhibition set for December 30th-January 1st and potentially convert his ability to get to the final at the 2006 Australian Open final to a win. He says,“I feel stronger on the court, I feel faster and slowly, slowly I will get better and better. I think I have improved in all departments.”
28-year-old Andy Roddick has been said to be on his way out after being on tour for twelve years and his ranking wavering in and out of the top ten. However, Roddick is not giving up so easy and is said to be working harder than ever on his health and fitness.
Lance Hooten, Roddick's trainers, told the ATP that Roddick aims and drive are high saying, “I was actually going to cut him short because if he’s not finishing the work out healthy then it doesn’t really matter. Andy looked at me and said, ‘You don’t win the %#@!!% Australian Open by cutting short your work outs.’”
While training in Austin, Texas, he has dedicated himself to explosive agility drills on court and sprinting different lengths on the track or up hill. His diet includes small frequent meals through out the day of vegetables, fruit, and lean protiens.
He begins the season at the Brisbane International on January 3 as the defending champion winning the title last year against the previous defending champion
Radek Stepanek
to win his first ATP Tour title since February 2009. He went on to win the
Sony Ericsson Open
title where he successfully beat
Rafael Nadal
and
Tomas Berdych
but his performance sank for the rest of the year after illness and injury.
To up his 2011 game, his trainer is preparing him to, "lose a few pounds of body fat and gain a few pounds in muscle tissue, so his body weight tends to stay around the same, but you change the body composition. By doing that you have a stronger athlete, a more explosive athlete, you have an athlete who can withstand the rigors of his sport.”
Not everyone is taking the 2011 fitness challenge. Marathon runner and tennis reporter,
Justin Gimelstob
joked on twitter yesterday, "I've conceded I'm a binge eater, in my depressed state due to being held captive with this weather I just ate half of a pumpkin cheesecake!"
