(April 23rd, 2012) American Lisa Raymond has now earned another achievement in her long and stellar career -- she is now the oldest woman ever to hold a No.1 ranking on the WTA computer.
Raymond joined her fellow doubles partner Liezel Huber as co-No. 1 this week on the WTA Doubles rankings list. It marks the fifth time in the 38-year-old Raymond's career that she's earned the top spot. Since partnering with Huber in 2011, Raymond has won eight titles including Paris [Indoors], Doha, Dubai, Indian Wells and last year's U.S. Open.
"It's definitely a lot more special this time than ever before," Raymond told WTA.com. "I'm the fittest I've ever been in my career, and I found the right partner too. Liezel and I always say it's about the team - you win together and you lose together, and you work hard together. This is gratifying for both of us - and for me at 38, to be back to No.1 after such a long road, it feels amazing."
Raymond along with her partner Huber will be strong favorites to win the women's doubles titles at the upcoming Grand Slams Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the Summer Games in London.
"I am so happy for her," said U.S. Fed Cup captain Mary Joe Fernandez "She has worked so hard to be back at the top and I can't even imagine doing that at 38! She and Liezel make a great team and will be going for the gold at the Olympics."
