(October 4, 2010) A stress fracture in her foot has forced Agnieszka Radwanska to pull the plug on her season and could cause her to miss the Australian Open in January as she continues her recovery.
The World No. 11 announced her season was over following her 7-5, 6-7(3), 5-7 loss to Angelique Kerber at the China Open in Beijing.
"I'm done for this year with a very serious injury, a stress fracture," Radwanska said. "It's a complicated injury and there's some chance it won't be healed in time for Australia. We will see and I just have to hope I will be ready. I have an excuse for losing today. I just realized how serious the injury was just before I came to Asia to play in Tokyo and Beijing. I'll be pulling out for the rest of this year."
Radwanska said she was uncertain when she first suffered the injury. Since she lost to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the San Diego final in August, Radwanska has slumped to a 3-4 record.
The 21-year-old Radwanska has finished No. 10 in each of the last two years, but injury-induced inactivity means she will likely not complete the year ranked inside the top 10.
"I'm probably not going to make a top 10 finish as I won't be playing the in last two tournaments of the year and the other girls are playing well," Radwanska said. "It's been a good year and I think I should finish in the top 15."
