Heather Watson's Memphis Blog #2
By Heather Watson
(February 19, 2013) --
Thank goodness for a quick doubles match yesterday – my body needed that! I’m definitely still a bit sore from my first round marathon on Sunday, but I’m hoping that will subside before singles tomorrow.
As painful as it was to get moving, I always love getting on the doubles court with my partner, Marina Erakovic. It’s still crazy to think that we won the first two tournaments we played together last summer! She’s one of my best friends on tour now, but I always tell her that I thought she was kind of scary before we actually met. She didn’t talk to people, didn’t smile. But once you get to know her, she’s absolutely great.
I’m very much a people person, so I love the team aspect of doubles. Of course, that made my recent Fed Cup trip all the more enjoyable. We were completely exhausted after playing four teams, but having the other girls around makes everything so much more fun. It also helps that our coach, Judy [Murray], is seriously one of the most positive people I’ve ever met. I think it might be entertaining to see her snap one of these days. She’s just SO positive!
Speaking of Fed Cup, I just saw that the whole team was featured in
Hello!
Love it! I’ll be honest, this was actually my
second
appearance in that particular magazine. I know, I know…impressive stuff. But seriously, I really do enjoy dressing up and representing women’s sports. It’s great for tennis.
I was lucky to have a full day off today, so I took my time getting ready before heading out for an 11:00 practice. Truth be told, I’m definitely not a morning person. I love to laugh and I’m always up for anything (skydiving, bungee jumping…whatever!), but just give me some time to wake up first.
After practice I had a great lunch, which may or may not have included a piece of carrot cake (it was so good!). Some people are superstitious, eating the same meal every day. That is definitely not me. I think I would drive myself crazy.
Tomorrow it looks like I’ll play Andrea Hlavackova, and we’ve always had good battles in the past. I’m just going to go out and give it my best like I always do! Before that, though, I have to suffer through a massage. I know it’s good for my muscles, but I’m just not a fan of someone else touching me. Plus, I’m terribly ticklish!
I’ll let you know how it goes (the match, not the massage)!
