The 18-year-old notched her first WTA main draw win and simultaneously became the first player to knock out a top seed in Bastad’s first round.
Filling in for Serena Williams, who was forced to withdraw from the event due to illness, Cornet had her serve broken four times and only managed to win eight of her 35 second-serve points.
“She’s such a good player,” said Kontaveit. “I had to stay there mentally every point. It was mentally really tough.”
Kontaveit wasn’t the only qualifier to have success on Tuesday. World No. 201 Laura Siegemund took out fourth-seeded Yaroslava Shvedova, 7-5, 6-3. It was also the German’s first main draw win.
