Novak Djokovic will be the top-seeded men’s singles player at Wimbledon next week, the tournament announced on its web site Wednesday. The Serb, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the world behind Rafael Nadal, benefits from Wimbledon’s unique seeding formula, which places emphasis on a player’s grass-court results from the last two years instead of just letting current ranking dictate its seeds.
Last year’s champion Andy Murray also got good news on Wednesday. Murray moves up to the No. 3 seed, which ensures he won’t have to face Djokovic, Nadal or Federer before the semifinals.
The current No. 5 was runner-up at Wimbledon in 2012 before becoming the first British man in 77 years to win the title last season.
This year’s Australian Open champion and current world No. 3 Stan Wawrinka drops to a No. 5 seed based on the formula.
The formula didn’t cause any big changes on the women’s side. Serena Williams nabs the top seed, with the rest of the top four all seeded according to ranking. The 32 seeds are listed below.
Main draw play at Wimbledon begins on Monday June 23. The draw for men’s and women’s singles will be released this Friday.
