Cirstea Reaches Quarterfinals at Bank of the West Classic

Sorana Cirstea
of Romania got past Saisai Zheng of China in second round play at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, California with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Cirstea, who upset
Na Li
in the second round of
Wimbledon
will have to wait until later this evening to find out who her next opponent is, as third-seeded
Dominika Cibulkova
takes on Erika Sema in the second match of the night session.
Cirstea's best performance this year came in Barcelona where she reached the semifinal before losing to Cibulkova in straight sets on the red clay.
The 22-year-old has only appeared at Stanford one previous time. She lost to
Agnieszka Radwanska
6-0, 6-1 in the opening round of the 2009 event.
Top-seeded
Serena Williams
will get a day off in California before facing sixth-seeded Chanelle Scheepers of South Africa in quarterfinal action tomorrow.
Suarez Navarro Advances at Palermo
Fifth-seeded
Carla Suarez Navarro
of Spain advanced to the quarterfinals of the XXV Italiacom Open in Palermo, Italy today. The world No. 41 gained safe passage into her third WTA quarterfinal of the year when her opponent, Anna Tatishvili of Georgia, had to retire with Suarez Navarro leading 6-1, 3-2.

Barbora Zahlavova Strycova
of the Czech republic also advanced, defeating Julia Cohen of the United States, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
