(November 1, 2010) Andy Roddick knows how to pick soul mates (he's happily married to super model Brooklyn Decker) and service motions (he leads the ATP in service games won and break points saved) but asking Roddick to pick NFL winners is like asking Mr. Magoo to call the service line at a Roddick match — you're setting yourself up for disaster.
Roddick, a noted Nebraska Cornhuskers, made his NFL picks for SI.com's Celebrity Picks NFL Contest and found the experience to be as fulfilling as being run over by Ray Lewis.
Roddick picked just six winners in 12 NFL games played over the weekend — he correctly called the Chiefs, Rams, Chargers, Raiders, Patriots and Bucaneers' victories — and has a shot at one more win tonight. Roddick picked the Colts to beat the Texans.
Interestingly, Roddick, who once played a junior tennis match against Dru Brees, quarterback of the Super Bowl champion New Orleands Saints, picked against Brees and the host Saints in the nationally-televised Sunday night game against the Steelers. New Orleans won 20-10 and Roddick lost.
The ninth-ranked Roddick is set to return to tournament play this week in Basel, drawing an all-American first-round match against Sam Querrey. The 22nd-ranked Querrey beat Roddick in their last meeting in the Memphis quarterfinals in February.
Roddick prepared for his return to tournament tennis by getting toasted.
"(I) just ordered some wheat toast from room service to which the response was: do you want it toasted?" Roddick posted on his Twitter account today.
