Clay season may be over before it begins for Daniil Medvedev.

World No. 2 Medvedev will be sidelined for one to two months after undergoing hernia surgery.

The US Open champion said he’s been playing with “a small hernia” in recent months and had “a small procedure” to fix it.

Roland Garros starts on May 22nd, putting the Russian's status in doubt for playing the clay-court Grand Slam. Medvedev reached the Roland Garros quarterfinals last spring after failing to survive the first round in four prior Paris appearances.

“The last months I have been playing with a small hernia,” Medvedev posted on Instagram. “Together with my team I have decided to have a small procedure done to fix the problem.

“I will likely be out for the next 1 – 2 months and will work hard to be back on court as soon as possible. Thanks for all the support.”

Australian Open finalist Medvedev looked labored at times bending over and leaning on his Tecnifibre racquet during his 7-6(7), 6-3 Miami Open quarterfinal defeat to defending champion Hubert Hurkacz on Thursday.

Though Medvedev fought hard, he lacked his typical explosive movement and took a medical timeout for treatment.
