Canada’s Bianca Andreescu will not begin her comeback at the sight of one of her biggest victories of 2019. The 19-year-old Canadian announced her withdrawal from the 2020 BNP Paribas Open on Saturday, saying that she has not fully recovered from the knee injury that forced her out of the WTA Finals in Shenzhen last October.

“As many of you know, I’ve been working through an injury I suffered last year during the WTA Finals,” she said in a statement posted by the tournament. “It’s been a long road to recovery and while I was looking forward to getting back on court and defending my title at Indian Wells, unfortunately I’m still not 100%."

The Canadian has been practicing and rehabbing since the beginning of the season, but has yet to feel good enough to give it a go competitively.

She struggled with different injuries in 2019 as a shoulder injury kept her off the courts for nearly four months. She played one match from late March til August, but returned to win the title at the Rogers Cup before going on to become the first player in history to win the US Open on her main draw debut.

Andreescu will turn 20 on June 16. She won the WTA’s Newcomer of the Year award in 2019 as well as the Lou Marsh Award, which goes to Canada’s top athlete.
