Live tennis, with fans, is coming to Atlanta.
On the heels of the news of four top players testing positive for Covid-19 during competition at the Adria Tour, and while America (and Georgia) is experiencing an uptick in coronavirus cases, Draft Kings has announced that its All-American Team Cup will take place in Atlanta from July 3-5, with 450 fans in attendance (30 percent capacity).
According to Forbes, the event will test players for Covid-19 and for antibodies prior to arrival. Masks will be given out to spectators but will not be mandatory. Six feet of guaranteed social distancing space for fans has been promised.
“We feel like we have an opportunity to show the world that a live tennis event with fans can be successful,” tournament director Eddie Gonzalez told Forbes. “We think it’s very important for the sport. It’s exciting and humbling for our team to know that this is the first live spoprting event in Georgia with fans and it’s the first live tennis events in the United States with fans, and it’s important that we’re successful because that will help pave the way for the rest of the tours moving forward.”
Georgia has recorded nearly 70,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and spiked to nearly 2,000 cases a day this week on two occasions.
Five-time Atlanta champion John Isner will be joined by Sam Querrey, Tennys Sandgren and Steve Johnson on Team Stripes. Frances Tiafoe, Reilly Opelka, Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul will play for Team Stars.
The players will all stay on the same floor in the Marriot, Peachtree Corners.
