Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro is planning to finish her career on her terms. The former World No.6 had originally planned to end her career in 2020, but when the coronavirus and Hodgkin Lymphona conspired to take the 32-year-old away from the sport, the Canary Island native has redoubled her efforts and is now setting her sights on a return to the court in the second half of 2021.
“I would like to play another Grand Slam, obviously in the second half of the season,” she said in an interview with Mundo Deportivo, according to translated quotes from Tennis Majors.
Suarez Navarro was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma in August and has since been spotted on the comeback trail as she nears the end of her chemotherapy treatment. She has posted several inspiring vidoes of herself working herself back into shape in recent months.
Suarez Navarro revealed plans to participate—if possible—at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games, and during the North American hard court swing this summer.
“I’ll see if I can qualify for the Olympic Games,” she said. “I would like to be in Tokyo. I also want to play a part in the American Tour, and that’s it. My dream is to play three or more tournaments.”
