Keeping up with the game of tennis, by the numbers. Each day at Tennis Now we’ll give you a fresh set—Here’s a numerical rundown of what we saw over the weekend in Madrid, Estoril, Rabat, Munich and Prague and what we might see on Monday.
4
Number of multiple title winners on the ATP Tour in 2019. Two more players won their second title on Sunday as Cristian Garin and Stefanos Tsitsipas broke through in Munich and Estoril respectively.
4
Number of match points saved by Karolina Pliskova in her first-round victory over Dayana Yastremska on Sunday. The No.5 seed improves to 22-6 on the season and will face Kateryna Kozlova in round two at Madrid. She’s also locked down the great Conchita Martinez as her full time coach…
2
Number of match points saved by Cristian Garin en route to his title in Munich (he saved two in the quarter-finals to defeat Alexander Zverev at Munich for his first career Top 5 win). It’s the second time that Garin has saved match points and won a title this season—he saved five against Jeremy Chardy before winning the trophy in Houston.
6-3
The career record of Felix Auger-Aliassime against the ATP’s Top 20. The 18-year-old Canadian snapped a three-match losing streak against the Top 20 on Sunday when he defeated Denis Shapovalov. He will have another Top 20 opponent at Madrid when he faces five-time Madrid Open champion Rafael Nadal in the second round.
19-6
The remarkable record of Chile’s Cristian Garin in 2019. The 22-year-old had only earned one main draw victory at that ATP level in his career prior to 2019. This year he’s the owner of two titles, three Top 20 wins and seven Top 50 wins.
7
Number of WTA seeds that fell in first-round action at Madrid (out of 16). The highest seed to fall was No.6-seeded Elina Svitolina, who fell in straights to Pauline Parmentier. No.10-seeded Aryna Sabalenka (Kuznetsova), No.11-seeded Caroline Wozniacki (RET with back injury to Cornet), No.13-seeded Madison Keys (Cirstea), No.14-seeded Kontaveit (Sasnovich), No.15-seeded Wang Qiang (Vekic) and No.16-seeded Julia Goerges (Kuzmova) also were tripped up in round one.
