The WTA offseason is always flooded with news of coaching splits and coaching hires—but it’s not the norm for a player headed to the WTA Finals to split with a coach prior to one of the biggest events of the calendar year.
But that’s the reality for Angelique Kerber, who announced today that she’s parting ways with coach Wim Fissette, effective immediately.
According to the statement—which was translated by Germany’s Tenis Magazin, the split was “Necessary due to differences of opinion regarding the future of the alignment.”
Fissette, a former coach of Kim Clijsters, Victoria Azarenka, Simona Halep, Sabine Lisicki and Johanna Konta, joined forces with Kerber last November and helped guide the German back to Grand Slam glory after a particularly disappointing 2017. Kerber won Wimbledon, her third career major title, and has thus far earned 45 wins and two titles overall in 2018.
The world No.3 will make her fifth career WTA Finals appearance next week in Singapore.
