No. 25 seed Serena Williams may be the lowest seeded player left in the tournament. But for many Williams is the favorite to perhaps win an eighth Wimbledon title.
Williams eased into the last eight with a solid 6-2, 6-2 win over Russian qualifier Evgeniya Rodina on Centre Court Monday.
The fourth round match was historic in that it was the first ever meeting at a Grand Slam between two players who were both mothers.
“I’m a perfectionist. I always find something wrong. I thought it was a good scoreline, but it was tougher than the scoreline. She can really hit the ball well and that’s why she got so far so it was an interesting match to say the least,” Williams said later.
Williams dominated thoughout most of the match. The seven-time Wimbledon champion secured an early service break in the first set. After 30 minutes, Williams wrapped up the 6-2.
Williams’ big serve was on display throughout the fourth round encounter. As evidenced when the former World No. 1 struck back to back aces to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the second set.
Rodina, who defeated Madison Keys in the last round, managed to break back for 2-3 later with a return winner on break point. But that only delayed the inevitable as Williams would break Rodina again in the next game.
From there, Williams would soon complete the 6-2, 6-2 victory in just over an hour.
With the result, Williams will reenter the top 100 rankings after the tournament ends. Next up for Williams in the quarterfinals is Italian Camila Giorgi.
