First Wuhan. Now Beijing.
Could Singapore be next?
Caroline Garcia claimed the China Open title with a 6-4, 7-6(3) victory over Simona Halep on Sunday, marking her 11th straight victory that leaves her in eighth place in the Road to Singapore standing, which means that Johanna Konta will need to reach at least the final at Moscow to have any hope of making it to Singapore.
Garcia won for the first time in three tries against Halep by saving nine of ten break points in a tense two-setter that concluded in just under two hours.
Halep went 0-for-9 on break points in a critical seventh game of the second set, and later dropped the set in a tiebreaker.
The Frenchwoman’s 11 consecutive wins match the longest streak of her career; she improved to 3-17 against the Top 5 with the victory.
Garcia becomes the first unseeded champion at Beijing and the first player in history to win Wuhan and Beijing back-to-back.
