Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka notched a first-round win over 22-year-old Jordan Thompson to set up a second-round clash with Jack Sock in Miami. Nishioka, playing at a career-high ranking of No.58 in the world, reached the round of 16 at the BNP Paribas Open last week after upsetting Ivo Karlovic and Tomas Berdych. The 21-year-old nearly upset Stan Wawrinka as well, but couldn’t serve the match out on either of his two tries during their round of 16 encounter.

Nishioka, who reached the third round at Miami last year, saved 11 of 14 break points to defeat Thompson, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.

It was also a big day for a few other #NextGenATP players in Miami. 20-year-old Jared Donaldson defeated Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund, 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-2, to set up a second-round encounter with No.28-seeded Mischa Zverev, while American qualifier Ernesto Escobedo defeated Dan Evans, 7-5, 0-6, 6-3, to book a second-round match with No.25-seeded Fernando Verdasco. The 20-year-old American was making his main draw debut.

19-year-old Taylor Fritz knocked off Adam Pavlasek of the Czech Republic, 6-2, 6-3, and will face Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second round.

The day was not without strangeness, either.

Jiri Vesely defeated Tommy Haas in a match that was interrupted and had to be delayed several minutes when an iguana was spotted on top of an on-court scoreboard and eventually ran onto the court. Haas took a selfie with the iguana as it stood perched on the scoreboard, before attendants forced it to relinquish its position. The Iguana scurried across the court and ended up on the opposite scoreboard before a crew member finally corralled him.

Dudi Sela knocked off American Christian Harrison to set a clash with Rafael Nadal in the second round while Fabio Fognini defeated Ryan Harrison to set a second-round tilt with No.30-seeded Joao Sousa.
