In an all-British opening-round clash, Konta held a 6-2, 3-0 lead when wild card opponent Tara Moore was forced to retire with a leg injury.

The 213th-ranked Moore, who hit 10 double faults on the day, took a medical timeout after going down a double break in the second set. Struggling to push off on her leg, Moore retired shortly afterward.

It was Konta’s first victory since she defeated 29th-ranked Yulia Putintseva in her Rome opener last month.

Konta raised her record to 22-7 on the season, which includes tournament titles in Sydney and Miami.

The top-seeded Konta will face former US Open semifinalist Yanina Wickmayer for a place in the quarterfinals.

Wickmayer powered past qualifier Elizaveta Kulichova, 6-4, 6-4.

Donna Vekic defeated sixth-seeded Shelby Rogers, 6-4, 6-3.

American Julia Boserup beat British wild card Laura Robson, 6-4, 6-3. Boserup will play Vekic for a quarterfinal spot.

Continuing her run of strong grass-court form, Aegon Surbiton Trophy champion Magdalena Rybarikova crushed qualifier Dayana Yastremska, 6-1, 6-2.

American Alison Riske broke serve five times in a 6-2, 6-3 conquest of Surbiton finalist Heather Watson. The fourth-seeded Riske will face Rybarikova next.
