Sharapova was scheduled to play seventh-seeded Lesia Tsurenko today.
The tournament announced Sharapova's departure in a Facebook post.
The former world No. 1 scored a 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 victory over American Jennifer Brady in her Stanford opener on Monday night. It was her first tour-level match since Rome in May.
"Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from today's match," Sharapova said in a statement. "Toward the end of the Monday night's match, I felt pain in my left forearm. After yesterday's scan, the doctor has recommended I don't risk further injury."
It was the 30-year-old Russian’s first victory in the United States since the spring of 2015.
