The World No.53 knocked off seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov for his first career Top 10 win to book a spot in the third round of a major for the first time, 7-5, 7-6(3), 6-3. He will face Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia for a spot in the second week on Saturday.

The Russian, who won his first career title on clay this summer at Umag, improved to 13-8 on the season and 4-4 lifetime at the Grand Slams. He won 59 if his second-serve points and saved eight of ten break points to get past Dimitrov in two hours and 26 minutes.

Dimitrov was considered as a threat to go deep this year in New York after he claimed his first Masters 1000 title just over a week ago in Cincinnati. The Bulgarian drops to 35-15 on the season and 25-7 on hardcourts.
