Simona Halep kept alive her chances of reaching No.1 at week’s end by reaching her fifth straight Western and Southern Open quarterfinal. The Romanian’s 6-4, 6-2 win over Anastasija Sevastova sets up a quarterfinal with either No.7-seeded Johanna Konta or No.11-seeded Dominika Cibulkova.

Halep can rise to No.1 with a title this week at Cincinnati. She improved to 37-11 on the season by winning her fourth in a row over Sevastova.

No.6-seeded Caroline Wozniacki and No.8-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova were also winners on Thursday in Cincinnati (before the rain hit and delayed play for over two hours).

Wozniacki increased her tour-leading win total to 48 by defeating Aussie qualifier Ashleigh Barty, 6-4, 6-2.

Wozniacki can hit the 50-win mark by reaching the final. She will face either top-seeded Karolina Pliskova or Italy’s Camila Giorgi in the quarterfinals.

Kuznetsova eased past Carla Suarez Navarro, 6-2, 6-4, and will face either No.4-seeded Garbine Muguruza or No.16-seeded Madison Keys in the quarterfinals.
