Seeds stepped up in Wuhan.

Six of the eight seeds in action won their matches at the Wuhan Open.

In an all-Romanian clash, fourth-seeded Simona Halep held a 6-3, 2-0 lead when Irina-Camelia Begu retired from their second-round match.

Tokyo champion Caroline Wozniacki stretched her winning streak to six matches with a 6-3, 6-2 dismissal of 16th-seeded Samantha Stosur.

"I felt surprisingly good on court today," Wozniacki said. "I was expecting to be tired, maybe not have the right timing, since it's completely different conditions. But I played well and I was happy with getting a late match today. I got to sleep in, relax all day. Yeah, it was good."

The former world No. 1 will face qualifier Katerina Siniakova in the second round.

No. 7-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro did not drop serve in a 6-4, 6-3 conquest of Yanina Wickmayer.

In an all-Czech match, US Open finalist Karolina Pliskova pounded 12 aces in a 6-3, 7-5 victory over 2015 Roland Garros finalist Lucie Safarova.

Tenth-seeded Dominika Cibulkova defeated Alize Cornet, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

Two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova broke serve six times in a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jelena Ostapenko.

No. 11-seeded Johanna Konta crushed Annika Beck, 6-1, 6-2.
