Ana Ivanovic’s coach, Nigel Sears, who is also Andy Murray’s father in-law, collapsed during Ivanovic’s third-round match and had to be treated by paramedics before being taken to the hospital.
Sears, 58, is reportedly conscious and breathing at this time.
He was not in the player’s box at the time he collapsed, but the commotion in the stadium caused the match to be indefinitely suspended.
Ivanovic was notified of the situation by tournament officials before leaving Rod Laver Arena, but Murray, playing at the time on Margaret Court Arena against Joao Sousa, was not notified of Sears’ situation.
Kim Sears, Nigel’s daughter and Andy Murray’s wife, is at home, due to give birth to the couple’s first child in the next month.
After it was deemed that Sears was safe and stable, Ivanovic and Keys were given the option to continue the match and they elected to do so, after a delay of approximately one hour.
The players are currently in the second set. Murray and Sousa are in the third set. We’ll bring you reports from the players when they become available.
