It started fast and it never slowed down. The crisp, relentless attack of Slovakia’s Jana Cepelova wore down a listless Garbiñe Muguruza and eventually the 23-year-old came away with a 6-3, 6-2 win to reach the third round at Wimbledon for the second time.

Day 4: Bencic Forced to Retire with Wrist Injury

It was Cepelova’s second Top 10 win in as many years at Wimbledon. Last year she shocked No.3 seeded Simona Halep before falling in the second round.

"From the beginning I feel really good on the court, because I had such good memories from the last year," Cepelova said. "I beat Halep there. And I step on the court really with the confidence. I just believe myself every point, every game. I tried to win."

Cepelova was incredibly solid from the onset, and really never let the World No.2 into the match.

She jumped out to leads of 3-0 and 5-1 behind steady groundstrokes, lots of variety and a really strong second serve.

Muguruza tried to battle back from 5-1 down but Cepelova came through with a clutch forehand winner that kissed the line to close out the opening set.

It was strange to see the powerful Muguruza outclassed on a grass court, but it was evident that Cepelova held sway over the play. The Slovakian was prepared for the daunting Muguruza return and quickly took charge of the rallies be executing with depth and pace against the Spaniard’s returns.

As the match wore on Muguruza couldn’t seem to summon anything special to counter.

“I think my energy was missing a little bit today,” Muguruza said. “From yesterday I felt already a little bit, you know, like, tired, I think is the best word. And today during the match, and after the match, I'm like, ‘It's a tough day today.’ I feel empty a little bit, and I start to be sick. But I think it was a little bit of combination. I think she played great, with no fear. She was trying a lot of stuff that was working. My energy was not really there. I was trying, but didn't work at all.”

Cepelova lost just five points in the first four games of the second set, quickly rolling to a 4-0 lead and pretty much coasting to the victory.

She notched the victory at the 59-minute mark when a Muguruza backhand missed the target.

“I felt this before,” Muguruza admitted after the loss. “When you are practicing hard, playing, playing, playing, one day suddenly your energy goes down. I'm not surprised… I had to play today. I went to the court. I didn't find it. But at least I was there looking for a chance.”
