Nick Kyrgios has been tabbed a future No. 1 and one of the best young players for years, but on Monday at the Rogers Cup in Toronto the 21-year-old Aussie took a back seat to a 17-year-old southpaw with a booming serve and a menacing ground game.

Canada’s Denis Shapovalov took the Boys’ singles title at Wimbledon just over two weeks ago, and on Monday the lumber wielding lefty took his talents to Toronto where he engineered a thrilling three-set takedown of 11th-seeded world No. 19 Kyrgios.
Not shy on the big stage, the wild card entrant told reporters that he requested to play on Centre Court and he made the most of his chances, taking advantage of 18 Kyrgios double-faults and a generally listless performance from the Aussie to notch his first tour-level win.
"I think the atmosphere really carried me forward today," said Shapovalov. "It’s tough playing the first time on centre court but by the end of the match I felt like the crowd really liked it when I was getting pumped up."
After taking the opener in the tiebreaker, Kyrgios broke the Ontario native twice to take the middle set--but Shapovalov took care of business in the decider by taking a 3-0 lead and not surrendering a break the rest of the way.
"I just didn’t play great, he played well," Kyrgios lamented. "Obviously he was excited, playing in front of his home crowd, I know what that feels like.”
Shapovalov moves on to face Grigor Dimitrov in the second round.
Other seeded winners on a busy Monday in Toronto were ninth-seeded John Isner, twelfth-seeded Bernard Tomic and 16th-seeded Jack Sock.
Borna Coric, Kevin Anderson and Mikhail Youzhny also advanced.
