Four wins in five matches may not seem like much but it is something that Bouchard only managed once for all of 2015. And after her season was cut short by post-concussion symptoms there were many questions about how quickly she could make it back to top form this season.
Asked today how far she was from her best form, Bouchard was honest and direct. And maybe a bit modest. “I still feel like I’m far off, personally,” Bouchard said. “But it’s not too terrible.”
Bouchard battled through a tough test from last year’s French Open quarterfinalist, but rose to the occasion when she needed to. After taking the opener she fell behind 3-0 in the second set, but rallied to take the next four games to regain control.
Bouchard broke serve five times on 12 opportunities and won 68 percent of her first-serve points in the contest.
Bouchard’s victory sets up an intriguing battle with Italy’s Camila Giorgi. Giorgi, seeded second, eased past Japan’s Nao Hibino, 6-2, 6-2.
