Roger Federer made the most of a late start with an early finish for his fourth round match at the Australian Open. In just under 90 minutes, Federer booked his place in the quarterfinals for a 12th time his career.

Due to the length of several long matches before his, Federer found himself taking the court at near 11pm to face No. 15 seed David Goffin of Belgian. Though Goffin had taken a set off Federer in their last meeting in Basel, nothing could have prepared him for Federer’s fine form tonight.

Federer, after a quick service hold, quickly had Goffin on the defensive in the first set. After seizing a break of serve, Federer did not waste time wrapping up the first set in just 21 minutes.

Moving forward into the court with ease, Federer soon put on a master class for fans at Rod Laver Arena that included the great Rod Laver watching from the stands.

Already up another quick break, Federer claimed another one with a forehand return winner off of a short Goffin second serve. Goffin, though competing hard, could only watch as Federer won point after point.

Goffin engaged Federer in a long rally late in the set, but only to see it end when Goffin struck a ball just long. Federer, then with a lunging half volley lob from the baseline that sailed over Goffin’s head before landing in, took another break.

An easy serve gave Federer a two sets to love lead without even an hour yet posted on the clock.

The third set once again saw Federer take an early break with a crosscourt forehand winner.

Though Federer led 4-1, Goffin finally started to make some inroads in the match. He broke Federer at last in the next game. Goffin managed to keep himself close with Federer in the set, but it was a little too late as Federer served for it up 5-4.

Federer needed one final well placed serve on match point to seal the convincing 6-2, 6-1, 6- 4 win.

The impressive Federer hit 39 winners and was also 19 of 22 from the net.

Federer will next face Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinals.
