1. Vital Statistics: Rubin was born on February 2nd, 1991 in Long Island, New York. He continues to reside there.
2. Early Days: Rubin started the game at age one thanks to his father and family who are all tennis players. At the age of seven, he started taking lessons at the John McEnroe Tennis Academy. Instead of going away from home to train, Rubin stayed in the Long Island area.
3. Wimbledon Wonder: In 2014, Rubin won the Junior Wimbledon Boys title. He became the first American male to win a junior major since Bjorn Frantangelo won the French Open in 2011.
4. From College to the Pros: Rubin chose to attend Wake Forest University. During his freshman season, he led his team to the ACC Championship and was named ACC player of the year. After one year in college, Rubin decided to turn pro.
5. Major Breakthrough: In the fall of 2015, Rubin earned the USTA Pro Circuit AO Wildcard Challenge for having the best overall results during several events. That gave him a wildcard into the Australian Open main draw.
The No. 328 ranked Rubin faced No. 17 seed Benoit Paire of France in the Australian Open first round. Rubin won all three sets in tiebreaks to score his biggest career win and first ever win at a major.
6. In His Own Words: “People have done way better than me at my age. People have won slams at my age so winning round one is not too terrific,” Rubin said when asked how he would celebrate. “My girlfriend’s sending me pictures. I’m trending on Twitter. I mean, that stuff is cool.”
7. Idol Worship: While growing up, Rubin’s favorite players were Andre Agassi and Lleyton Hewitt.
8. Favorite Things: Rubin’s hobbies include soccer and photography. He also likes following the New York Islanders ice hockey team.
9. Goals: To be Number One in the world.
